Sugar in Beverages: Effects on Human Health

Abstract

In the late 1960s and through the 1970s, John Yudkin argued that sugar (i.e., added sugar) was implicated in several diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD) [1–3]. However, the supporting evidence was rather weak and the hypothesis never gained widespread acceptance. Recent evidence has added much weight to this belief that sugar plays an important role in the etiology of several diseases.
