Abstract

The elderly population, typically defined as greater than 65 years of age, is the most rapidly growing age bracket in the United States. The US Census estimates that by the year 2020, there will be over 54 million people living in the United States over the age of 65 (13.5 %) and by 2040, this will increase to over 80 million people (20.4 %) [34]. In 2020, approximately 2 % of people will be greater than 80 years of age, and this percentage will double by 2050 [34].
