Abstract
As the telescope began to approach completion in the UK and the building on Mauna Kea was being finished, it was time to start planning the movement of both men and machines to Hawaii. An important financial aspect of this would be the tax implications of importing the equipment into Hawaii, since US customs duty was a potentially large cost. The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) team had avoided paying duty by having a special act of congress (Public Law 93-630, 3 January 1975) passed to allow their telescope and its supporting hardware free entry in the USA. In London the SRC administrators looked into both this and other options and did indeed find a solution. Accordingly on the 18th of March 1977 US customs authorised import of UKIRT components free of tax noting that these components would remain the property of the British Government while in the United States.
