Abstract
On January 7, 2010, following many months of intimidation, the African workers of Rosarno took part in violent protests in the village. This was the last of many episodes that demonstrate how—from within the enclaves of their confinement—these migrant workers had planned an elaborate strategy of resistance. Above all, it was a material resistance in the form of the workers’ refusal to adhere to the dress codes of the dominant context and instead reconnect to their African cultural background. The numerous demonstrations, the goals of which were to secure employment and visas, were more conscious and politically organized and finally blew up into what has been considered to be a riot.
