Evaluation of Psychological Distress in the Rheumatology Clinic

  • Chapter
Psychosocial Factors in Arthritis

Abstract

Patients with rheumatic disease often present with comorbid psychiatric disorders, most commonly, depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety have been found to interfere with quality of life, increase disability, and contribute to other health risks. However, despite their high prevalence, these disorders are often undetected and/or unmanaged in rheumatology care. This chapter describes the importance of psychological screening in rheumatology settings and its importance in patient care, treatment, and outcomes. We review the most commonly used and empirically validated depression and anxiety assessment measures that are applicable for arthritis patients, including their strengths, weaknesses, and relevance for different cultural groups. We provide an overview of how to integrate screening and treatment protocols within a clinical setting and an example of an in-flow administration and referral process.
