Abstract
In this chapter we focus on issues salient to performing point of care ultrasound (POCUS) on pediatric patients. Special attention is paid to situations where POCUS can be used as an adjunct to the clinical exam. We review POCUS image acquisition techniques and image interpretation pearls for the following pediatric conditions: hydrocephalus, intussusception, pyloric stenosis, supracondylar fractures, and transient synovitis. A review of areas where POCUS may help overcome limitations described in JAMA’s evidence based “rationale clinical examination” include the following: infants with pneumonia, hydration status assessments, and deep tonsillar infections. Although this chapter is not an all-inclusive account of pediatric POCUS applications, we hope it will serve as a valuable reference and provide a practical approach to the use of bedside ultrasound during the evaluation of some important pediatric illnesses.
