Abstract

This chapter is a self-contained introduction to mathematical modelling. Some classical partial differential equations are derived from Newton’s laws of motion or else are developed by considering the conservation of quantities like mass and thermal energy. The resulting PDEs can be readily extended to give mathematical models of plate bending, the dispersal of pollutants and the flow of traffic on congested motorways.
