Abstract
These huge systems of millions of stars, along with gigantic clouds of gas and dust, have much detail to show a careful observer. The first half of the twentieth century saw tremendous advances in the tools of the professional astronomers; telescopes, photographic film and spectroscopic detectors. This allowed our knowledge of the size and composition of the Universe to grow in leaps and bounds.
