Assessment and Management of the Delirious Patient in the Intensive Care Unit

  • Chapter
Key Topics in Management of the Critically Ill

Abstract

Delirium is common in critical care patients and is challenging to diagnose. This account describes delirium risk factors, diagnostic criteria, screening tools and the consequences of delirium for patients including long-term cognitive impairment. It outlines currently available non-pharmacological and pharmacological management interventions to reduce and manage delirium symptoms.
