Abstract
A simple description of the interaction of electromagnetic irradiation with a quantum mechanical two-level system is performed in terms of the Einstein coefficients. A perturbation theory approach combined with the correspondence principle is used to obtain explicit expressions for the Einstein coefficients in electric dipole approximation, while avoiding application of the mathematical apparatus of quantization of the electromagnetic field. The results are applied to an introduction into the function principle of lasers.
