Abstract
The first year will often make you or break you as a leader. Important benchmarks to make in that year include earning your authority, identifying the cultural beliefs and assumptions, demonstrating your values, defining the beginnings of a strategic plan, and putting together a leadership team. To accomplish this, we present a set of common rookie mistakes to avoid. We also offer a variety of ways to learn about the organization. In addition, we urge the use of a stump speech to develop a strategic plan and to get buy-in.
