Abstract
Scientific disciplines have their own views on catastrophes and they also have different terminologies. ‘Catastrophe’ is a term with many facets and has been re-defined over the last centuries. It looks to past events and requires empathy, whether originated from an event caused by nature or by man.

Acknowledgement
Catastrophes are manifold, and I am very thankful for having the possibility to learn from different points of view from different scientific disciplines during lectures of the Evenarí Forum of German-Jewish Studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt I organized in recent years as well as from colleagues in Japan. The contribution to medicine was a happy coincidence during a conversation doctor—patient. Stimulating discussions with Gerhold Becker and Ursula Leppig, very helpful corrections of the English by Shirin Gomez and the drawing of some figures by Elisabeth Diehl are gratefully acknowledged.
