Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty

Abstract

In recent years, the indications for reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) have continued to expand. The utilization of RSA as a treatment option for comminuted proximal humerus fractures in the elderly patient population is one such area of growth. Historically, hemiarthroplasty has been the gold standard for the treatment of these severely comminuted fractures in this age-group and to date has yield mixed results. RSA may offer potential advantages over hemiarthroplasty, thus producing more consistent clinical outcomes for these patients. This chapter discusses the indications, surgical technique, postoperative management, and clinical outcomes of RSA in the setting of proximal humeral fractures.
