Abstract

At the beginning of 1973, I was finishing my diploma thesis at the institute of solid state physics of Karlsruhe University. The advisor was Professor Wolfgang Ruppel, an old friend of Manuel Cardona as I learnt from Manuel when I visited him first. In the frame of an institute excursion, I visited the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research (MPIFKF) for the first time in 1972. Among other directors, Manuel gave a talk during this visit.
