Abstract

“As we drove home the stars came out thick,” Hopkins wrote in his journal around the time he composed the sonnet “The Starlight Night.” This chapter discovers the rich library of astronomical imagery that permeates all of Hopkins’s later writing. While his later poetry connects the sky with Christ, his journal entries highlight the richness of the constellations, comets, northern lights, and other night sky events that he observed during his lifetime.
