Abstract

We present a simple model of amplification in XUV lasers which displays an inversion density threshold between a low-inversion, classical adiabatic regime and a high-inversion, dynamic regime involving Rabi oscillations. In the latter case, the small-signal gain is significantly smaller than the usually used adiabatic value, but the amplified pulse duration is no longer limited by the amplifier bandwidth. The dynamic regime can thus possibly lead to amplified femtosecond pulses.
