Contact dermatitis is an eczematous eruption that develops after cutaneous exposure to an irritating substance (irritant contact dermatitis) or allergic response to a sensitizing substance (allergic contact dermatitis). This underrecognized entity should be considered in any adult patient with a new onset pruritic patterned dermatitis with no prior history of atopic dermatitis. Patch-testing is the gold standard for diagnosis, but often a cause can be determined from a careful review of a patient’s cutaneous exposures.
