Abstract
Public health has only recently begun to consider the health needs of people with developmental and other disabilities, and a public health perspective has much to offer clinical practice and applied research. This chapter provides a basic overview of a public health perspective; describes the recent evolution in how public health views disability; illustrates application of a public health approach to the current health problem of obesity and its importance for chronic disease, particularly for people with disabilities; and summarizes the value of a public health perspective to intellectual and developmental disabilities.
