Abstract
The need to implement strategies that address the roots of violence highlights the importance of primary violence and aggression prevention, based on early child development (ECD) theory and implemented in home visitation programs. Today there are a significant number of programs using this approach in developed and developing countries, several of which are described in this book. The chapters in this book are based on ideas exchanged at the International Seminar on Home Visitation Programs: Preventing Violence and Promoting Healthy Early Child Development in São Paulo, Brazil. This first introductory chapter ends with a discussion of these ideas in relation to innovative home visitation programs and practices.
We must address the roots of violence. Only then will we transform the past century’s legacy from a crushing burden into a cautionary lesson. Nelson Mandela, foreword to the WHO World Report on Violence and Health, 2002
