Abstract
This chapter consists of seven appendices to the main text. The first is the case study that is used throughout the book, with each chapter offering an interpretation based on its particular lens. The second appendix provides a brief historical overview of the various editions of the DSM. The third explores the evidence challenging the notion that mental disorder is a matter of chemical imbalance, with particular emphasis on the “deficient serotonin” theory of depression. The fourth appendix summarizes a research study on what MSW students think mental disorder is and how they believe a clinician can know that someone “has” one, and the fifth explores some special considerations in the clinical assessment of children and families. The sixth and seventh appendices are specifically related to teaching: the former consists of seven different assignments and classroom activities that illustrate the approach to learning set forth in this book, and the latter consists of a sample 15-week syllabus to show how this book can be used as a primary text for clinical assessment and diagnosis courses, weaving DSM categories into the chapters rather than organizing chapters around the DSM.
