Abstract
Water quality is governed by basic chemical principles taught in general chemistry classes. Nevertheless, some readers will no doubt have only vague recollection of these principles. This chapter reviews some basic topics of chemistry to include atomic structure, atomic number, and atomic mass (weight), valence, solubility, reactions, the equilibrium principle and its relationship to thermodynamics, and electrostatic interactions among ions.
