Abstract

Both odontogenic epithelium as well as odontogenic mesenchyme may show malignant neoplastic degeneration, causing either odontogenic carcinomas or odontogenic sarcomas. These are rare lesions with a varying outcome, some of them being very aggressive, others less devastating. In this Chapter the following entities are discussed: malignant ameloblastoma, ameloblastic carcinoma, primary intraosseous carcinoma, clear cell odontogenic carcinoma, sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma and odontogenic sarcoma. When considering a diagnosis of malignancy within the jaw bone, metastatic disease should be ruled out at first.
