Abstract

A shoreline survey of Saipan’s west coast identified 150 WWII-related features, including an undiscovered infield landscape modification. Three main feature clusters were identified which appear to result from postwar cultural activities, such as hotel and park construction. A smaller cluster of steel-cell pontoons appears to be a watercraft abandonment site. A terrain analysis of the west coast helps contextualize the landscape and the features within it as part of a larger battlefield. While some of these features were difficult to categorize, all are representative of the engagement that took place in Saipan’s waters and on its shore.
