Introduction
Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) is an empirically supported treatment with wide dissemination in both in-person and online modes. IBCT was developed in the early 1990s by Andrew Christensen of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Neil Jacobson of the University of Washington in response to a growing body of research on the limitations of existing behavioral couple therapies. It emphasizes acceptance – that is, changing how partners respond to each other’s behavior – rather than behavior change alone, which provides new options for couples to improve their relationships. Two small clinical trials and one large multisite trial support the efficacy of IBCT in producing clinically significant improvement in relationship satisfaction.
It is noteworthy that IBCT was chosen by the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as one of the empirically supported treatments it is promoting for its clinicians. In the last few years, the VA has sponsored a 4-day...
