Abstract
Composite materials are engineered materials in which two or more materials are combined to form a new material with specific properties, in order to maximize some properties (stiffness, strength-to-weight ratio, tensile strength, etc.) and minimize others (weight, cost). A metal matrix composite (MMC) is a material with at least two constituent parts, one of which is a metal. The other material may be a different metal or another material, such as a ceramic or an organic compound. The majority phase (the matrix), which in MMCs is the metal, transfers external load to the strengthening phase. The minority phase is the strengthening phase (reinforcement).
