Emergencies in Bariatric Surgery: Highlights for the General Surgeon

  • Chapter
Minimally Invasive Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Abstract

Bariatric surgery is safely performed in specialized centers: complications are <1 % in almost all published experiences, with <0.35 % in some specialized centers, similar to cholecystectomy [1]. These complications are treated by the original bariatric center, where the required skills and knowledge are available. However, acute complications might require emergency treatment in a local district hospital [2–4].
