Area Coverage in a Fixed-Obstacle Environment Using Mobile Sensor Networks

Part of the book series: Studies in Systems, Decision and Control ((SSDC,volume 27))

Abstract

In this chapter, efficient deployment strategies for mobile sensor networks are proposed to improve the coverage area in target fields containing obstacles. The developed algorithms iteratively calculate and update the position of the sensors in order to improve the overall achievable coverage by the network. The visibility-aware multiplicatively weighted Voronoi (VMW-Voronoi) diagram is used to discover coverage gaps in networks that have sensors with different sensing capabilities. The sensors, then, reduce the size of the coverage gaps in the target field. The relocation strategy also considers possible existing obstacles in the field. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed deployment schemes.
