Micropaleontology

Abstract

The exploration of sedimentary basins for mineral and fuel resources requires a sound knowledge of the evolution of the sedimentary basin, including its origin, stratigraphic architecture, paleogeography and subsidence history. Micropaleontology is applied at various stages of basin analysis. The stratigraphic framework of the basin is primarily based on micropaleontology. Seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy need micropaleontologic support in a major way. The calibration of a seismic section and micropaleontologic characteristics of sequence stratigraphic surfaces and systems tracts are explained in detail. The role of microfossils in subsidence analysis and the thermal history of the basin are discussed in relation to the maturity of the source rocks.
