Abstract

Neonatal encephalopathy refers to a neonatal neurological syndrome characterized by depression of level of consciousness and seizures that are usually associated with respiratory depression, abnormalities of tone and power, and disturbances of cranial nerve function such as impaired feeding. Hypoxic-ischemic injury is the main cause of neonatal encephalopathy. However, neonatal encephalopathy may be caused by a myriad of other disorders including intracranial hemorrhage, hypoglycemia, intracranial infection such as bacterial meningitis and viral encephalitis, severe hyperbilirubinemia, and neurometabolic disorders. High-quality neonatal head ultrasound enables accurate and early visualization of different patterns of hypoxic-ischemic injury and detection of other etiologies of neonatal encephalopathy.
