Abstract

Seizures are a common manifestation of a variety of neurological diseases in newborns. Most cases of neonatal seizures are symptomatic. The most common etiologies of neonatal seizures include hypoxic-ischemic injury, ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhages, infections, brain malformations, and neurometabolic disorders. It is important to identify neonatal seizures and their underlying cause as soon as possible to initiate an appropriate therapy and avoid further brain damages. High-quality neonatal head ultrasound may provide helpful information to detect some etiologies of neonatal seizures.
