Abstract

Macrocephaly refers to ahead circumference that is larger than normal and may be caused by a large number of diseases including hydrocephalus. Common causes of hydrocephalus in neonates are post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus, congenital or neonatal infections, and morphological brain abnormalities such as Chiari 2 malformation, Dandy–Walker malformation, vein of Galen malformation, and stenosis of the Sylvian aqueduct. Ultrasound is very helpful in detecting hydrocephalus and its underlying cause as well as following changes in ventricular size over time.
