Abstract

A Road is the lifeblood of vibrant cities. Along with urban development and overspreading, roads which used to be dynamic are gradually overloaded. Especially, Renmin Road in Suzhou was built in early times, narrow, located in the centers, surrounded by complicated lands and protected by the old-city area. In particular, the road becomes “Permanent Parking Lots” during the rush hour because of the gradually declining traffic function, frequent traffic congestion and the disordered flux of vehicles. On 15th of March 2010, the Traffic Management Department in Suzhou officially implemented the proposal of rational dispersal for Renmin Road in Gucheng District so as to solve the massive and strong reaction to traffic congestion of the central city, thereby providing more convenience to people’s travel, making the traffic more orderly, shaping a better urban environment. After the implement, people in society held diverse comments about that proposal. As a result, the present study is designed to begin with the transportation and demand of service, and conduct a deep research on the implement condition of the project “Public-facility No-turn Left during peak” of Renmin Road.

Taking the Renmin Road of Gucheng District in Suzhou as its primary object of study, the dissertation conducted a deep research on the efficiency and effectiveness of No-turn left policy via various research methods. Based on the data of multiple aspects (the delay of stop, the flow of vehicles, average speed of vehicles and so on), it is seeking for an answer to the traffic problem. Meanwhile, this study is also conducted with the purpose to become a reference for a proposal to familiar traffic problems in other roads of Suzhou or traffic systems in other cities.
