How to Assess for Domestic Violence

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Handbook of Child Custody

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to aid child custody evaluators in the unique skill set required when evaluating claims of domestic violence. These skills include asking questions that will aid in making the critical distinction between domestic battery and domestic violence and further distinguishing the type of domestic violence that exists. By making an accurate evaluation, the evaluator will reduce the risk of further victimizing the victim of domestic violence and promoting safeguards for the children who are impacted by the violence in their homes.

Acknowledgments

This chapter is dedicated to my parents who have been great role models, my wife and children (especially my little one who endured many brush offs when she wanted to play while I wrote), and finally my lifelong mentor and friend, Sandy Gordon Steibel Fields of blessed memory, whose life story is intricately woven into mine.
