With the increasing demand for high data rates in wireless consumer products, there is a higher demand for wider RF bandwidth. Millimeter-wave bands meet these demands by providing wide RF bandwidths, allowing for Gb/s data rates. With 9-GHz of ISM (unlicensed) bandwidth between 57 GHz and 66 GHz, new standards have emerged to exploit the available bandwidth for high data rate applications leading to the development of the IEEE 802.11ad standard; a WLAN standard complementing the, currently popular, 802.11a/b/g/n for short range, very high data rate (up to 6.75Gb/s) applications. For wireless back-haul applications, the E-band spanning 71–76 GHz and 81–86 GHz allows 1Gb/s transmission over a distance of 2–3 km.
