Abstract

This chapter presents the in-depth case study dealing with the community composition, numerical abundance, biomass, and production rate of the ciliated tintinnids in the coastal waters of Sundarbans mangrove wetland for two consecutive years (2009–2011). A total of 37 species (31 agglomerated and 6 non-agglomerated) belonging to 11 genera have been identified from five study sites in Indian Sundarbans where Tintinnopsis (24 spp) represented the most dominant genera. Pronounced seasonal variations were noticed in environmental parameters and abundance, biomass, production rates of tintinnids. Water temperature, chl a, and salinity were found to regulate the seasonal tintinnid variations as revealed by stepwise multiple regression analyses. The changes in lorica morphology of a tintinnid in terms of temperature and salinity are discussed.
