Abstract
Amphetamines are a class of central nervous system stimulants. Amphetamine (alphamethyl-phenethylamine or α-methylphenethylamine) and methylphenidate are used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine can be used to treat narcolepsy. Amphetamines have also been used as dietary supplements for weight loss and physical performance enhancement. MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or Ecstasy) and methamphetamine are illicit empathogenic recreational drugs of abuse that can produce euphoria, enhanced mental and emotional clarity, sensations of lightness and floating, and other hallucinations.
