Abstract
From a patient’s perspective, a satisfactory bladder substitute must allow complete voluntary control of voiding, which requires a reservoir with an adequate capacity, complete urinary continence, and a normal pattern of micturition at the usual anatomical position. All this can be successfully achieved by an orthotopic bladder substitution. It would seem to be intuitive therefore that patients with an orthotopic neobladder enjoy a better quality of life (QOL) than would be the case with a stoma and a bulging urine-filled collection bag. Despite this, health-related QOL data apparently do not support this assumption.
