Abstract

The Lakshadweep Islands are subjected to different ecological, economic and natural hazard vulnerabilities. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is an essential tool for tracking the different issues and managing the resources in a sustainable way. These plans become all the more important with implementation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 1991 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India. ICZMP were prepared for the Lakshadweep Islands following the issues and resource based approach through field mapping supported with high resolution satellite imageries. Integration and analyses of data were done using Geographic Information System. Identification of sites for different development activities in each island was proposed based on stakeholders’ perception and EIA studies. Management options for the major issues confronting the islands are also discussed.
