Usability Assessment of Medical Devices from a User Perspective: Results of a Focus Group Discussion

Challenges and Opportunities in Health Care Management

Abstract

Due to poor usability of medical devices adverse events occur. To lay foundations to prevent such occurrences we present and discuss usability evaluation methods for medical devices from a theoretical perspective. Additionally, results from a focus group discussion are elaborated which targeted the identification of appropriate usability methods. Combining literature and empirical data, we suggest an assembling of heuristic evaluation and a supplementary usability questionnaire to evaluate medical devices. Applying this combined instrument, we expect a reduction of adverse events in medical treatment.
