Abstract

The universe is a weird place, at least by the standards of our everyday experience. Yet, there is a general consensus that the picture painted by modern science, both observational and theoretical, is more or less true to reality. Strange and counter-intuitive though much of the theory is, within the range of size, velocity and energy that defines what we might call our familiar world, it nevertheless appears to explain that world of everyday experience quite satisfactorily. Things only truly get weird when we pass beyond this and deal with dimensions, velocities and energy levels that pass far beyond our normal experience. Then we encounter the apparent weirdness of relativity, quantum physics and so forth.
