Abstract

What compelled the first settlers to leave a comfortable, prosperous and safe life to brave treacherous seas, rugged mountain ranges or perilous deserts? What compels us to go forward into the cosmos? Aerospace engineer and visionary Robert Zubrin believes that exploration is part of a built-in feature of the human species. “The innate desire to go where no one has gone; to build where no one has built; to do what no one has done … to see and do and go where no one has gone. That is the fundamental drive that brought us out of Africa. We only live in other parts of the world because we developed technology.”
