Abstract

The goals of this project were (1) to document the traditional medicinal uses of plants of Laos, with specific focus on plants used to treat symptoms of tuberculosis (TB), and (2) to provide biochemical validation of the claimed use. Data on the use of plants to treat symptoms of TB were explored from old medical documents in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts, as well as acquired through field interviews with contemporary healers. The collected plants were submitted to biological assays against virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (Mtb), followed by the isolation and elucidation of active molecules.
