Abstract

The methods commonly used for gravitational wave (GW) extraction from a numerical simulation are the quadrupole formula, perturbative matching, ψ 4, and characteristic extraction. These methods are reviewed, and the strengths and weaknesses of each method are discussed. The accuracy of the methods is compared for astrophysical scenarios that are commonly simulated numerically.
