Abstract

This chapter shares experiences from a creative arts practice & pedagogy that crosses disciplines and sectors. Its history comprises four decades of significant change in delivery methods & structures for creative arts subjects, from free-form studio practice and master/apprentice relationships to more academicized’ structures. The chapter outlines shifts from 9–5 classroom teaching to more flexible modes on and offline, and the adoption of pedagogies to suit such diversity. This chapter discusses how critical reflection, as a quasi-mandated component of curricula, can be creatively supported through non-traditional delivery methods, such as the innovative reflective practice of Lego Serious Play. LSP, originally created for the corporate sector, has been substituted for traditional lectures and seminars, alongside studio practice and for communicating work and ideas across physical distance. The democratic protocols of LSP (everyone shares, everyone builds, everyone speaks) stimulate involvement, while learning activities which are often conducted through text, such as the keeping of reflective journals (paper or digital) can be re-energised through combining approaches. The author illustrates the efficacy of this methodology for student learning across disciplines and its role in maintaining student energy, engagement and concentration (particularly helpful for students with attention deficit disorder or dyslexia), noting also that adopting three dimensional, kinaesthetic approaches helps students cross barriers of language and learning culture and strengthens memories of experiences.
