Complications of CSF Shunting in Hydrocephalus

Abstract

Complications of CSF shunts related to hardware material are described as “mechanical complications” and often they present as shunt failure. Materials are susceptible to damage either due to manufacturing defects or because of their interaction with the host’s environment which alters their physical properties. A disconnected shunt with a migrated component may result in significant morbidity, necessitating a close vigilance for shunted patients. There is lack of strong evidence in the literature regarding the overall management of patients with mechanical complications of CSF systems.
