The Changing Academic Profession in Japan

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the situation and change of working condition of faculty in Japan. In Sect. 8.2, we consider physical conditions for work in the university, and of human relationships in the university and the university institutions as organizations together with faculty members’ own specialties. Compared with the situation in 1992, it appears that the evaluation of university as an organization had become somewhat lower, while evaluation of facilities and resources and human relationships for a teaching and research environment had improved. The trends of change differ by university type, and especially in national non-research universities, the evaluation of the teaching and research environment has diminished remarkably. In Sect. 8.3, by focusing on the individuals, we investigate the main determinants of faculty salaries. As a result, we are able to demonstrate that faculty salaries tend to be determined mostly on the standardized bases of seniority and academic rank, and are largely uninfluenced by achievements. This trend had not changed since 1992.
