In Search of the Higgs Field

What physicists call ‘The Standard Model’ assembles all the properties of the subatomic world into a coherent theoretical picture; up to now its predictions have been confirmed by thousands of experiments. The Model is based on the 24 matter-particles of Fig.4.6 on p. 105, on quantum chromodynamics (which describes the strong force that acts on coloured quarks) and on an elegant description which unifies the electromagnetic force (which acts on all charged particles) with the weak force (to which all particles are subject). This ‘electro-weak unification’ is discussed later in this chapter.
