Abstract

As soon as I arrived home, I started reading about William Herschel and Harlow Shapley in George’s book, while playing the recording of Herschel’s music George had given me. The majestic sounds of the orchestra playing one of his symphonies filled my room. As I read the manuscript, I was greatly impressed by the dedication and zeal of the two astronomers in charting out the Milky Way. They had thereby initiated the exploration of the large-scale structure of the Universe. All this brought to my mind two quotations from Plato. I repeated those quotations to myself softly:
