Abstract
In this chapter, we briefly describe several kinds of application problems which naturally have nonsmooth characteristics. These kinds of problems arise in computational chemistry and biology, optimal control, and data analysis, to mention but a few. The interested reader can find more details of each class of problem in the Notes and References at the end of the part.
