Abstract
Most real-life problems in pure and applied sciences are not amenable to an explicit closed-form solution, so one must often move from formal calculus to numerical computation. Simple, concrete examples are used to explain why naive mathematical methods are not up to the task (although mathematics plays a central role in the analysis of robust, efficient numerical algorithms, of course).
